Emergency decontamination is a critical response action taken to minimize the harmful effects of hazardous materials exposure. In emergency situations, the priority is to quickly remove contaminants from individuals to protect their health and safety, even if this means doing so without the luxury of perfect environmental runoff controls.

In many cases, time is of the essence during emergencies, and immediate decontamination can prevent further absorption of hazardous substances into the body, thereby reducing the potential for severe injury or long-term health effects. Although proper runoff control measures are ideal and should be part of standard protocols, emergency circumstances can dictate that responding personnel act swiftly to save lives, even if it means temporarily accepting less than optimal environmental safeguards.

This aligns with the necessity of balancing effective decontamination against the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that in critical scenarios, human health and safety take precedence.
